On the Road with Sister Spit
"It was my honor to be in a van with 11 beautiful, talented women writers, for six weeks of this last summer of the millenium, performing our work accross the country. There certainly are worse fates and I found myself to be riding the rollercoaster of the full range of emotions.
I experienced the "learning feeling" so much that I am sure my brain folded to make more surface area to accomodate the newly acquired revelations. We performed almost every single night of the tour, it was an education to experience that much live work from such amazing and different creatures. For those of you who aren't familiiar with Sister Spit, it is an annual tour that is arranged and hosted by the great writers, Sini Anderson and Michele Tea- of San Francisco. Every year a group of women are selected by the two masterminds to embark on a group tour where each artist performs individually, but all together one after the other. Michele & Sini put their favorite 40 women writers into a hat and 10 get drawn out randomly and that's the bill! Most of the women are from the West Coast so I felt extra special being invited from the East.
Beyond being exposed to so much great writing: I witnessed my fellow travellers applying Vick's vapor rub to their nipples and clits in order to stay awake driving - I witnessed a breathtaking Percied meteor shower in the moonless black sky in middle of nowhere Michigan - I got pierced by the long needles of Silas Flipper - watched 50 whales in the wild with Lori Weeks - We body-rolled down a steep flowered summer hill off of the famous blue mountain highway - enjoyed the roadside attractions of route 66 - In Santa Fe we marvelled at a home - made circus with giant trained paper mache' puppet animals and stilt walkers and the fabulous turnbuckles trapeze artists. We were hosted by kindred spirits all across the land who fed us sweet things and arranged spin-the-bottle parties for our pleasure. We visited strip clubs in New Orleans and goth clubs in Houston. We won a gorgeous Schwinn bike from a raffle at a gay nightclub in Chicago and I watched as my friends ate lobster in Provincetown. We talked about the universe together and swam in the ocean. We performed for appreciative audiences everywhere, who laughed and clapped and got chills and gave us money. Above all, we fell in love with each other and it's nice to get that many good night kisses. All the cities of the U.S. impressed me in different ways and I just love the planet Earth so much! I'm so glad I live here.
Before we left for the tour we all recorded a CD in a studion in Chicago OVER THE PHONE, from each of our respective homes/workplaces. It's called LIVE ON THE WIRE 1999 Summer Sister Spit Tour - and to get it you have to bug the Sister Spit ring leaders, Sini and Michele in SF - I still need a copy too! It's totally great and I knew I should have stolen one when I had the chance!
Performing solo was great, I have not done it that extensively for a while because I've been concentrating on my two bands. I complied a new CD of solo work entitled ELEMENT (spoken word and singing) especially for the tour and it was a nice reminder to myself that I can stand alone when I want. It gave me a new articulation of freedom and I'm excited to bring that to TRANSMITTING and SOMNAUT. It's nice to be back with them, I missed playing with my genius friends so much. Sister Spit introduced me to more geniuses and it was a wonderful closure of the tour to get to perform at the Michigan Womyn's Festival."
