Q. Why do hotdogs come in packages of 10, but hotdog buns come in packages of 8?
Jon Hansen 1/23/00

A. Some time in the early 1950's, at a top secret nation wide meeting of hot dog market specialists, a conclusion was reached to get people to continually buy hot dogs and hot dog buns. Take note that "hot dog" was a replacement term instituted during World War II that attempted to Americanize the favorite food originally from Germany known as the Frankfurter. Also the refrigerator was becoming a regular appliance in almost every home, allowing more bulk purchases to be made. Anyway, the hot dog industry decided to ensure continued sales and constant stock in the American home by selling hot dogs in packs of 10 and buns only in packs of 8; therefore, there would always be either 2 hot dogs who needed the cheaper buns in order to be served in the favorite bun style OR 6 hot dog buns left; and certainly all that bread could not be wasted and hot dog buns are of a particular shape that makes them laughable when used in any other situation of cuisine. Of couse the amounts of hot dogs to buns in the refrigerator would vary over the course of different purchase overlaps- but there would always be one leftover demanding the purchase of the other.
